Who we are

Kvenna is located in the heart of Aalesund, Norway.

We deliver advanced machining, engineering, and product solutions for the marine and subsea industries.

Our team of around 40 employees is organized into two dedicated divisions:

  • Machining Department

  • Product & Engineering Department

Our product portfolio includes a range of unique, cost-efficient solutions tailored for marine and subsea applications – among them Soft Landing Cylinders and Torque Tool packages for subsea ball valve operations.

Facilities:

Kvenna operates a 5,000 m² machining hall alongside a dedicated assembly hall, featuring pressure testing facilities and multiple overhead cranes to handle projects of varying scale and complexity.

174 years of excellence

From the very beginning Kvenna has been a pioneer within the marine and mechanic industry. The story behind Kvenna stretches back to 1861, when shipbuilder Nils A. Liaaen established his yard in Aalesund. From that workshop grew an industrial environment that shaped vessels, machinery and propulsion systems for generations of seafarers along the Norwegian coast and far beyond.

Through fires, wars and shifting markets, the company kept evolving. Early steel vessels, pioneering factory trawlers, hydraulic controllable-pitch propellers and complex maritime machinery were all developed and produced at Kvennaneset. Throughout the 20th century the business expanded internationally through licence agreements, export, engineering services and advanced mechanical production.

As the large shipyard activity gradually ended, the mechanical competence remained. The heavy slipways gave way to modern machining halls, engineering services and high-precision production – but the knowledge passed down from generations of builders, machinists and engineers stayed.

Today, Kvenna carries this legacy into a new era. Our CNC machines, engineering tools and digital workflows stand on a foundation built over 170 years: craftsmanship, quality, reliability and the ability to solve demanding challenges for customers who depend on robust, well-engineered solutions.

What we do

Our Machining Department produce a wide range of parts and components based on advanced CNC machining and a high level of quality control. We have performed machining for world-leading players within the marine- and subsea industry for decades, especially for a wide range of propulsion systems.

Our Product & Engineering department provides technology development to customers both nationally and internationally, and holds extensive competence within design, analysis and verification work. We are working closely together with the world-leading players within the industry and has for nearly 40 years developed unique products for oil companies and their contractors.

Our values, vision and purpose

At Kvenna, we exist for one clear reason: to solve our customers’ machining challenges with precision, reliability and craftsmanship. Our purpose is grounded in decades of experience — and a commitment to deliver high-quality machining and service on the components that matter most.

Our vision is ambitious: to become one of Norway’s leading technology companies in customised machining by 2030. To reach that goal, we build on what defines us every day:

Competent. Safe. Solution-oriented.

Competent

We take pride in our expertise and continuous development. Being competent means having the right skills, knowledge, and experience to deliver high-quality solutions. It also means staying curious and embracing innovation to ensure we remain at the forefront of customised machining.

Safe

Safety is non-negotiable. We prioritise the well-being of our employees, customers, and partners by maintaining strict safety standards in everything we do. A safe working environment builds trust and ensures sustainable operations for the future.

Solution-oriented

Challenges are opportunities. Being solution-oriented means approaching every task with creativity and determination, finding practical and efficient answers to complex problems. We focus on delivering value to our customers by turning ideas into results.

These values guide how we work, how we collaborate and how we create value for our customers. They reflect who we are — and who we aim to be in the years ahead.

History

Kvenna stands on the shoulders of an industrial legacy that began in 1861, when A.M. Liaaen established his shipyard in Ålesund. For more than a century the company evolved through shipbuilding, mechanical production and propeller technology, laying the foundation for the technical expertise that still defines Kvennaneset today.

In 2001, Liaaen Engineering and Liaaen Mekaniske were merged to form Liaaen Teknologi, bringing engineering, machining and mechanical services together under one entity.

In 2007, the company continued under new ownership as Strata Møre, following the acquisition by Strata Marine & Offshore. Three years later, in 2010, it became part of Bandak Engineering (Bandak Group AS).

The next major shift came in 2016, when the business was acquired by Novela AS and continued as Kvenna EMT AS, further strengthening its capabilities within advanced machining, engineering and maritime solutions.

Today, this long industrial lineage is carried forward under the name Kvenna AS (2024).

The name is new, but the ownership rests on an unbroken line of mechanical expertise, industrial development and maritime operations spanning more than 170 years. Through changing structures and owners, one thing has remained constant: a strong foundation at Kvennaneset — and a long-term commitment to precision, quality and customer trust.
