Kvenna’s engineering history goes back to 1983, when “Engineering” was part of our original name: Liaaen Engineering. At that time, we worked closely with our sister company, Liaaen Mekaniske. These two later merged to form Liaaen Teknologi, the company that in recent years has become known as Kvenna.

Throughout this history, our engineering work has focused on mechanical components of all scales — from the smallest individual parts to larger mechanisms and complete assemblies. Development work for companies in the subsea and maritime sectors has long been one of our core activities, and it continues to be a central part of what we do today.

Curiosity is often at the heart of our engineering approach. We work by exploring questions like “How can we…?” or “What if…?” — questions that lead to new insights, new challenges and, ultimately, solutions we can implement in the tasks we take on.

Although our engineering department is small, our many years of experience allow us to navigate complex challenges with confidence. At the same time, we remain humble to the fact that solving new problems often requires looking beyond past experience. When needed, we deliberately step back, challenge our assumptions, and seek new perspectives — enabling us to think creatively and develop innovative solutions for our customers.

About the SLC simulation-video

This simulation is intended to capture the dynamics during the final seconds of a landing, where one SLC impacts the foundation slightly ahead of the three others. The velocity graph shown is taken at the centre of gravity (CoG) of the module, here illustrated as a translucent 800-tonne weight requiring four K-SLC 450 units, one at each corner. Added mass and hydrodynamic effects are first analysed in Ansys Aqwa and then transferred to Ansys RB Dynamics. In RB Dynamics, the continuously changing hydrodynamic resistance in the damping elements is implemented using Python, capturing the resistance of each SLC at every analysis timestep. The two software modules are then connected and run in a co-simulation environment to model hydrodynamics and mechanism behaviour simultaneously.

The simulation shows that one SLC landing slightly before the others is possible due to increased hydrodynamic resistance and damping force as velocity momentarily increases at initial impact. However, as with any landing operation, the objective should be to achieve as simultaneous contact as possible for all SLCs. The velocity graph below illustrates this idealised case, where all four SLCs land simultaneously on the foundation — a condition that should be targeted as closely as possible in real-world operations.
